After 20-years of working in a technical area of photography, I did not take photos personally and disliked photography. The camera was a tool of the trade and did not bring me joy like my smartphone does now. This became apparent when my mum passed away. It was then that I realised photos were a gift for others.
I suspended my prejudice toward the smartphone and took more photos of my family and myself. I discovered a new love of photographing nature. Wanting to replicate 'big' camera photos, I bought every out-of-date smartphone photography course and book I could find. I also wasted a lot of time watching YouTube videos of the same outdated, limited, basic tips.
Then, over a coffee after an early morning coastal photo session with professional landscape photographer Kyle from 20West Photography
, my creativity and photos changed forever. We would shoot in the same locations, however, my photos were flat, with no depth of focus, were not vibrant, sharp and lacked that punch and pizzaz!
He explained that his creative journey involved mastering photographic principles and guidelines. The biggest gold nugget of wisdom was that he always approached his photo from the perspective of the photo viewer! He made decisions to attract, hold, guide or detract from the viewer's attention.
It is our job to provide all the visual cues (form, shape, lines, colour, tone, texture and subject) in a way that the viewer is engaged and interprets the image in their own unique way.
Having a framework accelerated my creative photography like never. My photos had a purpose, they had emotion, they communicated something, and they were special and meant something.
